Post Date:04/24/2026 10:25 AMThis spring, there are several opportunities to stay informed, engaged, and connected within our community. This edition highlights the work of our Environmental Commission in recognition of Earth Month, a recent community celebration at Calabasas Bark Park, and upcoming opportunities to learn more about the upcoming elections. You’ll also find information about a local charitable event and the recognition of a student achievement that draws attention to important environmental issues.
Events and Programs this Month
Genocide Awareness Month
In recognition of “Genocide Awareness Month,” traditionally observed in April, the Calabasas City Council issued a “Proclamation Denouncing Hate and Affirming Human Dignity” at its April 22nd City Council meeting. This proclamation seeks to remind our community about past atrocities motivated by prejudice and hate (such as the Armenian Genocide and the Jewish Holocaust, among others), in the hope that by doing so we can do our part to help prevent such abhorrent acts in the future.

Spotlight on the Environmental Commission
Earth Month provides a meaningful opportunity to recognize the important work of the City’s Environmental Commission. I am proud to recognize this dedicated group of volunteers for their ongoing commitment to preserving and enhancing the quality of life in our community.
The Commission plays a vital role in promoting thoughtful environmental policies and actions across air and water quality, land use, waste management, natural resources, and the protection of local flora and fauna. It also provides valuable support to the Planning Department and City Council by reviewing ordinances and State mandates, identifying key environmental priorities, and helping assess the resources needed to achieve these goals.
Current commissioners include Randi Feilich, Chair; Susan Ng, Vice Chair; Whitney Schwartz, Luresa Byrne, and David Cohan, Commissioners; and Benjamin Oroszlan, Student Member. Staff support is provided by Melanis Stepanian, Management Analyst.

LVMWD Butterfly Garden Dedication
This Tuesday we celebrated the grand opening of the new butterfly garden at Calabasas Bark Park. Hosted by the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District, this event brought community members together to recognize the addition of a pollinator-friendly space designed to support butterflies and promote sustainable landscaping. The garden enhances the park environment for visitors and their pets while contributing to local conservation efforts. Thank you to the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District and all those involved in the planning and completion of this project.

Student Film Documentary Places Third in C-SPAN’s National Competition
I would like to commend local student Andrew Neville, a senior at Viewpoint School, for his outstanding documentary examining the Calabasas Landfill and its environmental impacts in the wake of the Palisades Fire. His film takes a thoughtful look at the challenges surrounding landfill use, evolving waste policies, and the potential environmental effects on surrounding communities, highlighting an issue of real importance to our region. This impressive work, which earned 3rd place in C-SPAN’s national competition, reflects a strong commitment to research, storytelling, and civic engagement. I encourage residents to take a few moments to watch and support this meaningful project by one of our talented local students. Watch Andrew’s documentary.
Thank you for staying informed and engaged. I hope you enjoy a wonderful weekend. - James
