The Code Enforcement Division of the Building and Safety Department is responsible for enforcing the City’s Municipal Code on behalf of all City departments. The Municipal Code, adopted by the City Council, is intended to preserve and enhance community safety, appearance, economic stability, land use policies, and the overall quality of life expected by residents and businesses.

Code Enforcement officers prioritize education and outreach to encourage voluntary compliance with applicable codes and regulations. This approach has proven highly effective, resulting in a very high rate of voluntary compliance. When voluntary compliance cannot be achieved, the Code Enforcement Division works in coordination with the City Prosecutor’s Office to pursue advanced enforcement remedies, which may include both civil and criminal actions.
